Established in 2013 within the Faculty of Education at Hacettepe University, the Department of Special Education aims to generate both theoretical and practical knowledge that can be utilized nationally and internationally in the field of special education. The department is committed to training qualified special education teachers who can be employed not only in institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education but also in diverse educational settings both within and beyond Turkey. The undergraduate program admitted its first cohort of students in the 2016–2017 academic year. The program spans four years (eight semesters), and the medium of instruction is Turkish. Since 2018, a master's program in Gifted Education has been offered, followed by the launch of a master's program in Autism Spectrum Disorder Education in 2019. Additionally, a doctoral program in Gifted Education has been in operation since 2019.
Our department embraces a research-oriented approach grounded in scientific principles. In alignment with international special education programs, we strive to cultivate not only knowledge consumers but also knowledge producers who think critically and develop innovative solutions. Our students go beyond acquiring contemporary approaches and practices in special education—they gain the competence to address complex challenges in the field through creative and sustainable strategies. Research conducted in key areas such as early intervention, inclusive education, and individualized instructional design transforms into practical applications that make a direct impact on individuals’ quality of life. These projects, characterized by their high societal relevance, are guided by a strong sense of ethical responsibility aimed at maximizing the potential of individuals with special needs. As they progress in their professional development, our students also learn to become agents of change, making meaningful contributions to society.
